Why Product of Canada Skin Care Actually Matters — And What It Really Means

By Suzie Cunningham, Pink Avenue Skin Care, Toronto

If you've been seeing "Product of Canada" on skin care labels lately and wondering whether it's a meaningful claim or just clever marketing — you're asking exactly the right question.

As someone who has worked with skin for over 40 years, and who curated the Pink Avenue Canadian Skin Care collection in collaboration with leading Canadian formulators, I want to give you an honest answer.

What "Product of Canada" Actually Means

"Product of Canada" is not a tagline. It is a regulated label governed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

For a product to legally carry this designation, at least 98% of its total direct costs of production must be Canadian in origin, and the last substantial transformation of the product must take place in Canada.

That is a high bar. It means the formulation, the manufacturing, the ingredients — the overwhelming majority of everything that goes into that bottle — has Canadian origins.

It is not the same as "Made in Canada" (which requires only that the last substantial transformation occurred here, with no minimum on ingredient sourcing). It is not the same as "Canadian brand" (which simply means the company is Canadian-owned, regardless of where anything is made).

Product of Canada means what it says. And in skin care, that matters more than most people realize.

Why Canadian Skin Has Unique Needs

Canada is one of the most climatically demanding places on earth to have skin.

Our winters strip moisture faster than almost any other environment — indoor heating drops humidity to desert levels while outdoor temperatures drive vasoconstriction and barrier damage. Our summers bring UV intensity, humidity swings and pollution loads that stress the skin in entirely different ways.

Skin care formulated for a mild European climate or a year-round warm American market is not formulated for what Canadian skin actually goes through.

The Pink Avenue Canadian collection was built specifically around this reality — by someone who has been treating Canadian skin, in Toronto, through every season, for four decades. Every formula reflects that lived knowledge.

Why the Buy-Canadian Movement Is About More Than Politics

Recent research confirms what many Canadians already feel instinctively: 66% of Canadian facial skincare shoppers view Canadian-made products as more trustworthy than imported alternatives.

That trust is not misplaced. Canadian cosmetic manufacturing operates under rigorous Health Canada standards. Canadian formulators bring deep expertise and an intimate understanding of what Canadian consumers actually need — not what sells in global mass markets.

When you choose a Product of Canada skin care line, you are also:

  • Supporting Canadian jobs and Canadian expertise
  • Reducing the environmental footprint of long-distance supply chains
  • Choosing formulas that were built with your climate in mind
  • Buying from brands that are accountable to Canadian regulatory standards

What Makes the Pink Avenue Canadian Collection Different

The Pink Avenue Canadian Skin Care collection was not built by a marketing team. It was curated — by me, in collaboration with some of Canada's most talented skin care formulators — based on 40 years of treating real skin, understanding real concerns, and knowing what actually works.

Every product in the collection reflects three things I will never compromise on:

Performance. Clean formulas with no fillers and no shortcuts. Botanical extracts, advanced peptides, hyaluronic acid and next-generation actives — chosen because they deliver visible results, not because they look impressive on a label.

Integrity. Every product is vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free and free from synthetic fragrance. Product of Canada to the highest standard.

Relevance. Formulated for Canadian skin, Canadian seasons and Canadian lives. Not adapted from a global formula. Built here, for here.

Not Sure Which Canadian Skin Care Products Are Right for You?

Every skin is different. Every decade brings new needs. That is why I created the Pink Avenue Skin Care Quiz — a quick, easy way to discover which Pink Avenue Canadian products are best suited to your skin type, your concerns and your lifestyle.

The quiz features many of the Pink Avenue Canadian Skin Care products and takes just a few minutes to complete. At the end, you will have a personalized recommendation — your own curated Canadian skin care routine, built around your skin.

How to Build Your Canadian Skin Care Routine

Not sure where to start? Here is how I recommend approaching the Pink Avenue Canadian collection:

  1. Cleanse — Choose your cleanser based on your primary concern. Hyaluronic Bliss for hydration, Skin Glow Illuminating for uneven tone.
  2. Tone — Apply your matching toner to prep the skin for maximum absorption.
  3. Treat — Layer your serum while skin is still slightly damp. This is where the real work happens.
  4. Eye care — Apply eye serum or cream with a light tapping motion around the orbital bone.
  5. Moisturize — Seal everything in with your face cream, chosen for your skin type and concern.

If you are unsure which products are right for your skin specifically, I am always happy to help. A short consultation — in person at our Toronto clinic or by phone — can save you years of trial and error.

A Final Thought

We live in a time when it has never been easier to buy skin care from anywhere in the world. Global brands, overnight shipping, influencer recommendations — the options are genuinely overwhelming.

But there is something to be said for choosing skin care that was built where you live, by people who understand your climate, your seasons and your skin — and who are held to Canadian standards every step of the way.

That is what Product of Canada means to me. And it is what every bottle of Pink Avenue Canadian Skin Care represents.
